The East Midtown Greenway
February 2024 marked the grand opening of the East Midtown Greenway, spanning from East 53rd Street to East 61st Street in Manhattan. This achievement was made possible through the outstanding efforts of union contractors and carpenters with the New York City District Council of Carpenters. The Greenway’s design showcases three integral components: a pedestrian bridge, an in-water structure, and a topside landscape with a bike path. The strategically positioned pedestrian bridge at 54th Street serves as a vital link, connecting both pedestrians and bicyclists and fostering a sense of community within the greenway. The meticulously crafted walkway, with breathtaking views of the city, is both beautiful and functional. It is poised to become a cherished addition to the midtown community.

The NoMad Ritz Carlton at 1185 Broadway is another example of the impressive hospitality work completed by the New York City District Council of Carpenters and union contractors. One of the few skyscrapers in the area, this 580-foot-tall hotel features 250 guest rooms, state-of-the-art amenities, and a panoramic view of the city. 425 Park Avenue will provide 667,000 square feet of office space with a new restaurant on the ground floor. This billion-dollar project, an 897-foot-tall, 47-story commercial skyscraper in Midtown East, will be the first full-block tower on Park Avenue in over 50 years. This impressive new addition to the area showcases the industry-leading training, safety, and quality that union contractors and the New York City District Council of Carpenters bring to every project. Historic Frick Collection Set to Reopen, Showcasing Union-Enhanced Renovations
The Frick Collection, an art museum established in 1935 and located at 1 East 70th Street, plans to reopen in April 2025, after renovations and upgrades. The historic building, updated by union contractors and carpenters from the New York City District Council of Carpenters, houses an extensive collection originally assembled by Henry Clay Frick. Thanks to this expansion and renovation, it will hold even more works from the Renaissance until the nineteenth century. The updated building will feature the mansion’s second floor, increasing the permanent collection by 25%, as well as new facilities including an education room, an auditorium, and a 60-seat cafe overlooking the beautiful 70th Street Garden. Union carpenters and contractors are revitalizing this incredible institution with their expertise, ensuring high-quality craftsmanship and adhering to stringent safety measures to protect both workers and the building’s historic integrity.

New York Public Library’s Stephen A. Schwarzman Building
The New York Public Library’s Stephen A. Schwarzman Building at 476 Fifth Avenue, an NYC landmark, is in good hands with union contractors and the New York City District Council of Carpenters. This $317 million renovation will provide more public library space, as well as a new entrance on 40th Street, a new learning center, an enlarged exhibition space, and additional room for researchers. The project is another impressive example of union carpenters and contractors demonstrating their high standards of excellence in craftsmanship. Moynihan Train Hall
The newly completed Moynihan Train Hall has nearly doubled the existing Penn Station rail complex. This has given city commuters a new spacious and world-class transit hub. The 255,000 square foot train hall provides a direct connection to the Eighth Avenue Subway entrance and access to the 9th Avenue entrance for the first time. DISTRICT COUNCIL OF CARPENTERS TRAINING CENTER
The Carpenters Training Center is jointly sponsored by union carpenters and contractors to provide members with the training needed to bring the highest level of skill and safety to projects throughout the New York City metropolitan area.
New members are trained as apprentices in six state-approved programs for general building carpenters, concrete carpenters, millwrights, dockbuilders and timbermen, floor coverers and cabinetmakers.
Our apprentices receive nearly 600 hours of classroom instruction and more than 5,000 hours of on-the-job training over four years under the supervision of highly qualified industry professionals.
Experienced union carpenters have access to a lifetime of continuing education to stay up-to-date in the latest technologies and safety standards. Nowhere else in the industry does a similar commitment exist to a trained, skilled and safe carpentry workforce.
COMPETITIVE INITIATIVES
INSTALL
INSTALL (International Standards and Training Alliance) is a North American alliance of flooring mills, manufacturers, consultants, associations and contractors. Through comprehensive training and certification, we continuously improve the skill, productivity and attitude of our floor layers to ensure superior flooring installation.
INSTALL’s four-year curriculum is created by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters’ International Training Fund, and is delivered through classroom instruction and hands-on training. Content stays current with emerging trends, including best practices in occupied healthcare facilities, green building awareness and sustainability.
Core skills are emphasized in carpet, resilients, hardwood, artificial turf and more.
INSTALL constantly teams with leading mills and manufacturers to ensure that the curriculum meets current labor needs in the floor covering industry. INSTALL-certified installers leave the program with confidence and pride in their training, professionalism and work. Ultimately, they are trained to maximize productivity so that contractors remain profitable and competitive in the industry.

BEST PRACTICES IN HEALTHCARE CONSTRUCTION

When construction in hospitals is not performed by properly trained construction professionals, work on ceilings, walls and flooring can make infectious agents airborne through HVAC systems, drafts and foot traffic to other areas of the hospital occupied by patients susceptible to secondary infections.
Workers learn how to identify and classify project areas to best minimize risks, illness and injury.

The Carpenters International Training Fund (CITF) has developed an innovative training program to reduce the risk of contamination by working cleanly and safely in occupied healthcare facilities. The Construction ICRA Best Practices course teaches awareness of hazards including asbestos, lead, mold, silica, and other materials as well as blood-borne pathogens and other hospital-specific concerns. The curriculum was developed by consulting with leading construction-related infection control experts and is reviewed regularly to keep materials relevant to industry needs. Workers learn how to identify and classify project areas to best minimize risks, illness, and injury. The Best Practices program is a 24-hour training curriculum that teaches everything from containing the work area, hazmat and controlling exposure to communicating with hospital personnel and how to work within site-specific considerations.
