Union carpenters and contractors are involved in nearly every phase of new building and renovation projects. Here are descriptions of our trades of work.
Interior Systems professionals are experts in several facets of a structure’s interior. Typical work includes installing modern equipment and materials in commercial and public buildings—acoustical ceilings, computer-access flooring, metal framing, wall partitions, office furniture systems, and custom or factory-produced materials. Their specialized skills guide the assembly of complex interior systems using manufacturer-supplied technical data.
Cabinetmakers and woodworkers bring incredible skill and painstaking artistry to the woodwork, cabinetry, and decor of commercial, residential, institutional and retail interiors. They fabricate and install both decorative and functional elements of design specifications including trim and molding, cabinetry, ceiling treatments, doors, windows, exposed columns and beams, displays, mantels, and staircases.
Millwrights install, repair, replace and dismantle industrial machinery and equipment. Responsibilities require a wide range of skills from blueprint reading and concrete pouring to diagnosing and solving mechanical problems. When assembling machinery, millwrights fit bearings, align gears and wheels, attach motors and connect belts according to the manufacturer’s blueprints and drawings.
These union carpenters and contractors erect prefabricated exhibits or build custom exhibits for trade shows whether they are at the Jacob K. Javits Center or area hotels. They engage in floor layout, pipe and drape work, carpeting, booth maintenance, as well as rigging of signs for the exhibit.
These union carpenters and contractors perform the layout of all concrete form fabrication (whether made of wood, steel or any other composition). Their work includes shoring and bracing, erection for footings, walls, columns, pilasters, soffits, spandrels and perimeter forms for slab on ground as well as all construction joints, bulkheads, water stops and expansion joint material. They set all inserts, sleeves, boxes and any penetration in any slab, wall or column.
Based on the specifications of an architect, facility manager or interior designer, floor coverers install a wide variety of flooring materials including carpet, resilients, wood, laminates and sport surfaces. Professional floor coverers are found in commercial, residential and institutional settings, and are highly trained in using the industry’s many tools, adhesives and fastening systems safely and properly.
Union carpenters and contractors erect and dismantle sidewalk bridges, scaffolds, overhead protection, platforms, decks, staging, and shanties. They also install and operate hoisting systems for materials and personnel, including rack and pinion gear, bucket hoists, Chicago booms, concrete mixers, and lumber hoists. Specialized tools like collar clamps ensure safety and stability throughout the hoisting process.
These union carpenters and contractors work on buildings, foundations, bridges, tunnels, docks, wharves, and other land and water based structures. They direct cranes, install large, heavy timbers in many settings, and often cut, join, and fasten metal elements using welding equipment and oxy-acetylene torches. Marine divers work in a team of dive-tenders and dockbuilders to do full-time underwater construction.
